The Jewish Community and International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women

18 September 2017

International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women is about highlighting the prevalence of gender based violence, with 1 in 3 women around the world experiencing violence in their lifetime. For Jewish Women’s Aid it is an opportunity to further engage the community to work with us in highlighting the issues facing Jewish women.

Did you know….

Jewish women stay in abusive relationships 5-7 years longer than non-Jewish women

They can experience being ostracised from the community if they do decide to leave their abuser.

They are less likely to reach out for support out of fear that agencies may not understand their culture and religious needs.

Most Jewish women experience coercive control, the signs are not always obvious but the impact on a victim is immense.

In light of all of this, JWA IDEVAW 2017 campaign will again focus on domestic abuse in your area with increased focus on coercive control.

Our new posters will be available in November. If you feel that your organisation would benefit from displaying one contact us at communications@jwa.org.uk.

25th November 2017 marks International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women and 10th December 2017 is Human Rights Day. From 25th November we will be taking part in the 12 days of activism (not including Shabbat) marking the countdown to Human Rights Day. The 12 days of activism, JWA will highlight issues facing Jewish women and broader gender-based inequalities.

How can you help?

Join JWA on our 12 days of activism!

We will be tweeting and uploading posts on Facebook. Please like and re-tweet, helping us use this time to highlight issues facing women in your community. Put up a campaign poster in your community, encourage your Rabbi to speak about violence against women from the pulpit.

ARE YOU IN OR NEAR NORTH LONDON? Then visit us at the JWA awareness-raising stand at BRENT CROSS Shopping Centre, on 23rd November all day. We are there for the 5th IDEVAW running, together with our local partner agencies, raising awareness amongst shoppers of how people affected by domestic violence & abuse can access support in this area. Email us at communications@jwa.org.uk for more details!

Email us if you would like to discuss further ways that you can help! communications@jwa.org.uk
