Joanne Black Announced As The New Chair of JWA 21.01.2025
Press Release
Jewish Women’s Aid (JWA), the UK’s leading charity supporting Jewish women and children affected by domestic abuse, is delighted to announce Joanne Black as its new Chair.
Joanne takes over from Caroline Ratner, whose leadership steered JWA through challenging times including the Covid-19 pandemic and the aftermath of October 7. Caroline’s dedication, skill and passion left a clear mark, and we look forward to celebrating her great contribution to JWA. Caroline joined the JWA board in January 2019.
With a wealth of experience and a deep commitment to empowering women and girls, Joanne Black served as a JWA trustee from 2013 to 2020. She has a distinguished philanthropic record, including support for girls’ education in Bangladesh and women’s health initiatives. She is also a Director of the Regatta Group (her family business) and the former co-Chair of Nightingale Hammerson (until August 2024).
Joanne will officially start as the new Chair of JWA in February 2025.
Outgoing Chair Caroline Ratner says: “As my tenure as Chair of Jewish Women’s Aid ends, I reflect on what an incredible and fulfilling journey it has been and of how proud I am to have been part of this remarkable organisation. It has been a privilege to work alongside such a dedicated staff, board and volunteers and witness the profound difference Jewish Women’s Aid makes in our community supporting Jewish women experiencing domestic abuse and sexual violence. I am confident that Joanne, with her vision and passion, will continue to support the ongoing growth of JWA and I am excited to see all that lies ahead for the charity.”
Joanne Black, JWA’s incoming Chair, is looking forward to strengthening JWA’s impact, supporting women and children affected by domestic abuse. She says: “I know I am standing on the shoulders of the remarkable women who built JWA, whose hard work and commitment have paved the way. It is now our responsibility to carry forward our shared vision and continue to grow this vital organisation.” She adds: “I am excited to again blend my corporate expertise and non-profit experience to help the exceptional team at JWA into its next chapter of advocacy and support.”
Sam Clifford, Chief Executive of JWA, thanked Caroline Ratner for all her support, saying: “Caroline Ratner’s exceptional leadership has been a guiding light for JWA during some of our most challenging times, from navigating the uncertainties of the Covid-19 pandemic to supporting our community in the aftermath of October 7. On a personal level, I am deeply grateful for her guidance and wisdom, and we look forward to celebrating all that she has achieved for this organisation.”
Sam adds: “Joanne’s strategic vision, inclusive leadership, and passion for positive change are extraordinary assets. Her philanthropic achievements, ranging from advancing girls’ education to championing women’s health, align seamlessly with JWA’s mission. We are thrilled to welcome her dynamic leadership as we continue to grow and provide critical support to the women and children in our community who need us most.”
